MAGGOTFEST

Maggotfest 2009 will be held the weekend of May 2nd and 3rd (Sat & Sunday).  The team there (The Missoula Maggots) have extended the offer of hosting us at the tournament.  This entitles us to white water rafting, free beer and our playing the Maggots on the Thursday night which is the official start of the "festival".  Again the entire weekend is focused on camaraderie, beer guzzling and chasing women (for the single lads of course) and a little rugby here and there.  The spectacle of the event is first rate - teams are encouraged to wear outrageous outfits (games included), sing songs, boat race, meet like minded people from across North America, and have as good a time as humanly possible.  Quite literally rugby players (both men's and women's teams) take over the town of Missoula and the locals cater to their whims.

The basic itinerary that we have come up with for the ANT-Tour looks something like this:

  • Leave Wellington on or after April 27th
  • Land in LA or San Francisco on or after April 27th
  • Connection to and land in Missoula later that day
  • Spend a day in Missoula to acclimate
  • Play the Maggots on the 30th and drink beer
  • Rafting on the Lochsa River May 1st and drink beer
  • Maggotfest 2nd and 3rd...3 short games and drink beer
  • Recover in Missoula on the 4th...hiking, golf, tourist crap...or just drink beer
  • Travel to either Yellowstone for a day or straight to Jackon Wyoming
  • Hang in Jackson for a day or two (hiking, golf, rafting on the Snake River, sightseeing, bars, women...or just drink beer)
  • Play the Jackson Moose on Thursday or Friday (they'll require us to do a haka as standing policy) and then drink beer
  • Travel to Salt Lake City and see the city...get pissed on Mormon beer
  • Fly back to NZ on the 9th or 10th

Basically this itinerary is left fairly simple so we can add or change plans as the TEAM requires and is subject to change to meet the demands of the TEAM.

The players who commit to this tour are requested to make a non refundable $500 deposit to secure bookings. A seperate bank has been setup (Thanks Dennis) where all monies will be deposited. For those (like myself due to expensive computer gadgets and dentists) who don't have a spare $500 hidden away, an automatic payment is more than sufficient.

If you pay the deposit and wish to withdraw from the ANT-Tour your money will be well spent on essentials whilst overseas. However considerations will be made on a case by case basis. In the unlikey event of the ANT-Tour being cancelled all monies will be refunded.

You can expect costs of around $3000.00 plus spending money. However we are in talks with a sponser and a possible flight deals that will reduce costs. Please note that the funds for getting someone out of jail will not come out of team funds, lol.

There is also a expectation that those involved will make themselves available for some fundraising events to help reduce costs, this could include working bees etc etc. Also if you know of any fundraising or sponsors please let us know (Mike P, Oscar and myself). If you wish to play a more active role (help with admin etc) then please let me know.

Bank account details will come with official registration to Mike P.

Any questions please don't hesitate to give me a call or email (021 758580).

Before I sign off, a big thanks to Mike and Oscar for getting this off the ground.

28th June

  • Congrats to Mr. & Mrs Chris McHoull#8 due bubba No.1 on Christmas Day 2008.

  • Maggot-fest Update – we have 17 for the Tour, Quinny and Mike shall unveil the details this week (definite), welcome Matty O to the tour team do we buy a return ticket or do we await your return post 2009 season? Now, Scoobs and other ANT ex-pats off shore keen? Register interest to myself.

  • ‘Leave pass’ required for next team session at Cambridge, 5.30pm Saturday 12 July – all to rid the ‘hoodoo’ of loses to date!@! Also Andy Bennetts send off!

21st June

* ANT-iques (over 35’S) played with combined Ories ‘Magpie’ against Poneke ‘Pies’ on Sunday – pies and beer consume before and after. Excellent annual event, our 3rd year mixing it with our masters on/off the field. Good to see current ANT’s enjoying another social form of the game -  Matt O, Jeff McDonald#11, Steve Rodgers and Oscar.

* Maggot-fest rugby tournament is a goer (May 2009, probably 6th – 20th). Budget is capped at $3,000 for expenses except beer and lap dances (this is a mid-state bus trip – private chartered). Mike ‘MP’ Plivelich is firming itinerary this week. We have 15, requiring a further 7 – 10 Players and Reserve Grade Team! Please RSVP me now!

07th June

Jared rested a little happier on Sunday morning. The newest, proudest Dad of the team, a baby son - Hagen Muir Thompson. As junior 'Thompy' was not clearing from the "ruck area" properly, Rae is resting up fine now! We'll done Captain.

Maggotfest (Montana, USA 15's tournament) - we have 15 registered Players, We have interest from Yardies and Ginners also we need a squad of 22 to travel (budget $3000 plus expenses of food/booze/toll calls). Mike 'MP' is issue itenary later this week.

There is disquiet amongst the all the Reserve Grade Managers aimed at the WRFU resource allocation i.e referees (none) and ground transfers. This resulted in several Division 1 teams defaulting (biting their nose off to spite face), as a consequence the Ginners were gifted 5 pts, hence we are outright last of 10-teams. Therefore we are 99% consigned to division 2...so what changes then? Only that we get to run up against like minded OBU Teams - Righteous Bro's, Dinosaurs, Teddy Bears and The Yardies whilst still able to play against club teams. Goals set we are to win Division 2 (been 4 years since we last won a title!)

22th May

Last week we showed commitment and passion, a traditional Dead Ants game. This week we expect nothing less.

A no pay no play rule is now in place, if you have not paid your subs you will not be playing unless prior arrangement with myself (there are a couple of you already). Those that have received socks from me last week, payment of $15 is also required for these this coming week. I would suggest that those that need to cough up some funds get in contact with me in the next day or two.

Oscar is 90% sure he can’t be present at this weeks game (something about man card expired?) so for those that are unable to attend this weeks game can you email both Oscar and myself (craig.quin@orcon.net.nz).

Point of note is that this year we will be selling the Dead Ant Jerseys at the end of the season to help offset the costs of the new jerseys, cost $50 each. So if you have a particular jersey (number and size) that you wish to keep then you may wish to consider this in the very near future. The new jerseys look fantastic (did that sound camp?) and in due course will provide an unveiling.

Also, thanks to Silks, we have got some apparel that we will offering to the team in the next day or so. Will keep you posted.

  • Fitness – Reserve Grade is social ‘competitive’ reliant on week day to strength, speed and injury management.
