History of the Ants

The Dead Ants formed in 1988 out of the desire to continue playing after Under 21 rugby but without the need to train (outside of a pub). Numbers were strong from the start and an Ant two match tour of Australia in 1989 ensured the team's future as a go-ahead team that enjoyed playing hard on and off the field. This being the reason for the motto worn on all Ant jerseys - Non Hic sumus Areaneos Copulare!

The Ants were trail blazers as they took advantage of pub sponsorship in the early days, and were the first team in the Wgtn competition to play in their own jersey - the distinctive green jersey designed around the old 20's style.

The Ants have been strong on social events, helped greatly by sponsorship from sponsor pubs. Various homes throughout the years have included the old Western Park, Southern Cross (now back there after a long absence), Flanagan’s, The Old Bailey, and of course the Fat Ladies (back there again by popular demand). The team still enjoys a strong bond with the club. The annual Ant Ball is a much ANTicipated event on Wellington's social calendar and is also a solid source of fun and hangovers.

Jackie Ruru shield rugby has also been a special motivator for the Ants. Having held the shield numerous times over the years. Who could forget the great victory over the Teddybears back in 1993 or the defence against the Seven Ounces the following weekend in the driving rain and mud. Are currently rebuilding to replace the departure of nine core players overseas to spread the Ant gospel, the intention is to re-build a team that can win the reverred shield one more.
